Solo surf art show at Starbucks

From June 8th thru July 15th 2010, I have a selection of 11 artworks on display at a Starbucks location. I approached the manager, Erin, several months ago about featuring my work on her “art wall”. It is a pretty busy location, an it’s proximity to the the beach seemed like a good fit for my art.

I took some time in May and June to prepare a couple new pieces. One is called “Squid dive #2″. It’s a partial “tattoo” style painting on a longboard skate deck. I am really happy that that piece is attracting some attention and several folks have commented on the energy it has. It was a difficult space to hang. There are several shelves that can’t be moved and the lighting is a little dim and shadows are a problem. However, with the mix or art panels and skate decks I was able to get a presentation I was happy with. Stop by and have some coffee, enjoy the new bright color “art wall” and have a fun day in HB.

Great turnout at the Syren’s 15th anniversary

Saturday night April 3rd 2010 was an excellent event at Syren’s hair parlor and art gallery. The occasion was to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Syren’s. The owner, Lea Christy, really knows how to celebrate in style. She put together a top notch party, art show opening, and live music all in one night! She even had Syren’s brand energy drinks on hand to keep us all rocking. The art show portion of this event featured Los Desperdados art banditos. There were new original works by Tom Vadakan, Big Toe, Greg Landers, Alex Krastev, David Lozeau, Micheal Denicola, Candy, Miles Thompson and Will Barton. It was a real treat to see all the different styles and personalities in t he same room. I was also invited to show some of my skate deck and art panel paintings alongside the Los Desperados crew. Lucky for me, I got to show 13 original works!!! Local artist, SMA, also had a sweet collection on display. His Johnny Cash piece was a really big hit. Although it was sold, many others wanted to buy it also.

Tom Vadakan had a really strong collection of new paintings, I wanted to bring home several. Greg Landers had a real exciting series also. He even had a classic hand built and painted 10’2″ longboard up. It features an authentic BSA motorcycle tank emblem glassed in the fin!!!!! The Multi-talented David Lozeau was a pleasure to meet. He brought some terrific prints that all sold.

Tom Vadakan produced a great video here:

Here are a couple photos that Jim Quezada took.

Drew and Maria Brophy showed up also. If you don’t know Drew, he is one of my art heros, and I was really happy to speak to him in person. He had some really great feedback on all the artworks.

Another big highlight was Christian Fletcher’s arrival. It’s not my story to tell, but I’ll try. Lea Christy’s husband, Craig Christy, is a tattoo artist. in 1993 he tattooed the back of Christin Fletcher’s head with a very unique skull. Artist Alex Krastev painted a really cool rendition of this very tattoo, after seeing a photo on the internet, on an old school skate-deck. Alex did not know who had originally created this tattoo, and it was a coincidence that Alex with his painting, Craig Christy, and Christian Flecther could all arrive at Syren’s and pose for a photo.

The night ended with a live set by Dano Forte & the Juke Joint Freak Show. I missed this, but the positive reviews are pouring in.

Be sure to stop by Syren’s this month and pick up some great art. You will be amazed at the quality and value of many of the art  works. Thanks Lea!!! for a super fun night.
